When you think of an album title like Suikerspin, you probably immediately think of a Dutch band. Wrong! Melys comes from the mountains of North Wales. After a few unsuccessful attempts at small, local record companies, the band was contracted by the Dutch label Transformed Dreams, known for Zoppo, Zea and Seedling. The members of Melys have been good friends with the latter band since they performed
… together in 2001 at the Noorderslag / Eurosonic festival in Groningen. This Dutch connection thus explains the album title and it must be said: it is an appropriate name. The music of Melys is nice and sweet, without you getting tired of it quickly. The voice of singer Andrea is alternately reminiscent of Kate Bush, Björk, Cerys Matthews (Catatonia) and Harriet Wheeler (The Sundays). The songs written by husband Paul also seem to be influenced by bands like Pulp and Super Furry Animals. In other words: melodic indie pop with catchy guitar riffs, beautiful keyboard sounds and playfully applied electronics. Highlights include the songs Cuckoo, Porn Myself and Baby Tornado. BBC deejay John Peel even put the single Chinese Whispers at the top of his list of favorite songs of 2001. Very nice band! (MvP)more
