Meindert Talma comes from the Frisian town of Surhuisterveen. In addition to being a musician, he is also a writer, poet, chess player and professional drinker. In 1999 he gained national fame for the first time with his third album . This was his debut for the Dutch quality label (including , , ). Meindert Talma & The Negroes' fourth album, Leave Stumper, was also released by Excelsior.
It was produced by Excelsiors 'house producer' Frans Hagenaars. Talma's music has evolved from lo-fi to experimental pop with original Frisian and Dutch lyrics. This makes him think of bands like , and the Belgian . Talma does not always sing cleanly, but his special lyrics (with many nice word jokes) are very worthwhile. As far as we are concerned, the strongest songs on the CD are Alicia, Blond Uit Een Flesje and the solid Rock & Rollsex music. The CD comes with a nice booklet with drawings by five cartoonists from Tilburg, including Gummbah. This makes Leave Stumper not only fun to listen to but also to watch! (MvP)more
