The raspy voice of British singer Jon Allen is often compared to that of his more famous fellow countryman Rod Stewart. His debut album Dead Mans Suit (2009) was nevertheless well discussed. Originality is not Allen's most important asset anyway. His entertaining soft pop songs speak for themselves, there is no need for hip productions or garish arrangements. His second CD Sweet Defeat also contains
… eleven excellent songs and you can clearly hear where the writer got his inspiration from. Just as Stewart has already filled five CDs with 'The Great American Songbook', this Brit also likes to look at America. This has resulted in all kinds of small forays to roots, country and blues. Besides admiration for Allen's customization as a songwriter, Sweet Defeat also sometimes provokes a little frustration when he acts too carefully. The idleness is therefore lurking. When a weak saxophone solo is used halfway through the record, everything actually falls into place. Allen has enough talent, but lacks a portion of daring. (JE)more
