The Rotterdam rapper U-Niq has a long history in Dutch hip-hop. Like all 'old-timers' he started rapping in English, collaborated with Nas and Guru and released his debut album Married To Music in 2000. Dutch rap then became the norm, and if his cooperation project Committee Gunmen (with Postman and E-Life, among others) also yields less than hoped, U-Niq temporarily disappears from the picture.
U-Niq is back with his Dutch-language debut Rotterdam. The switch to Dutch is logical given the success of 'Nederhop', and it also works out well for U-Niq. No hit parade material in Rotterdam, but sincere and personal tracks in which U-Niq gives his vision on the peaks and troughs of life. Of being a street boy, stay in prison to his love of music or his mother: U-Niq delivers it honestly and without romanticized heroic stories. The result is a very strong album. (IV)more
