The American indie band Modest Mouse can be placed in a long tradition of like-minded sleepers such as The Pixies, Pavement and Franz Ferdinand. But the most striking reference on this third album are the angular dance rhythms of the Talking Heads, especially in the first single Float On and the similar The View. In addition, the great attention to detail in the production is striking: Modest Mouse
… is easily one of the best-sounding bands from the alternative corner. Inviting the Dirty Dozen Brass Band has been a good move. This jazzy company lends itself more often to rock artists (the most famous example is the album Spike by Elvis Costello) and this time also manages to enrich the sound considerably. The fact that Modest Mouse does not want to take any notice of traditional song structures only makes the band more elusive. (MS)more
