Linde Nijland and Annemarieke Coenders met at the age of seventeen. It was not long before the Groningen girls sang their own compositions together. Their presentation at various festivals was unusual: only two girls and a guitar. But their beautiful polyphonic singing was enough to win over the audience. The duo were offered a contract and in 1995 their debut album Ygdrassil was released, also the
… group name. In the following years they toured the Netherlands and were support acts for Luka Bloom and Mary Black, among others. After the second album Pieces (1997) Coenders concentrated on graduation and Nijland made a Dutch-language solo album, Visman (1998). In 2000, the third album, We Visit Many Places, was released, which also featured guest musicians. On the fourth album Nice Days Under Darkest Skies (2002) Nijland's compositions predominate. Guest musicians now also accompany the wonderful singing of Nijland and Coenders. Fans of the Flemish folk trio Laïs will also appreciate the music of Ygdrassil. (SvdP)more
