After two subdued solo albums,
Jack Poels rejoins Rowwen Hèze for the follow-up to the well-received album
Voorwaartsch (2019). In this group from Limburg's America and with its own status in the Netherlands, Poels audibly feels at home as if he's in a regular bar. On Onderaan Beginne, Voorwaartsch's thirst for more musical depth is continued, again together with producer Huub Reijnders. The opening
… title song, with the atmosphere of carnival and football mania, is misleading in that respect. The songs that follow, such as Hoe Lang Nog and Bruid Op Bloete Veut sound much more subtle and warm, with influences from tango and musette and a leading role for accordionist Tren van Enckevort. But of course never without losing sight of the open and friendly Limburg folk culture. After all, Rowwen Hèze's best songs resound just as easily in the theatre as they do in the pub. (MR)more
