Mitski Miyawaki conquers many hearts in early 2016 with a series of intense songs. When her fourth album Puberty 2 is released a few months later, we can no longer ignore the American artist. Her music sounds like a summary of three decades of indie pop. For example, there are rattling guitar songs that could have come straight from the 90s. There are modern sounding electronic tracks on the other.
Mitski can rock nice and loose, but also sound very tight. One minute she sounds like , the next like . As a former conservatory student she apparently learned to master many styles. Yet her songs don't sound artificial or invented. This is mainly due to her penetrating vocals. Mitski does not mince words and sings about intimate subjects. She does this with a lot of dedication, sometimes even gasping for breath. You can clearly hear that some sentences really need to get out. In that respect Puberty 2 is a well-chosen title. Mitski is an adult centipede who struggles with love, relationships, doubts and anger. Like a real teenager. (JE)more
