'We are the 1980's', 'Bring back 1996', just a few snippets of lyrics from The Wombats. The young Liverpool trio has a thing for the past. The band's biggest hit was called Let's Dance To Joy Division (2007) for a reason. Don't be fooled by the title of their second album, This Modern Glitch, because singer Matthew Murphy mainly sings about the past. Everything is stirred up, from racing driver
… Michael Schumacher's victories to Murphy's first kiss. The Brit is clearly overcome by nostalgic feelings, which he sings very honestly about. Singing about girls and fast cars may not be a sign of adulthood, but that's just who he is. A teenager trapped in the body of someone who is already in their thirties and who develops a beer belly. The music, on the other hand, sounds quite contemporary. That will be in large part thanks to American producers Butch Walker (Katy Perry, Avril Lavigne) and Rich Costey (Muse, Foo Fighters). This Modern Glitch is a genuine summery pop album that will probably not become as timeless as the inspirations Joy Division and Michael Schumacher. (JE)more
