The four young guests of The Rifles had barely finished their debut album when they were already kicked on the boat to the Netherlands to play shows there. And directly at a festival like Lowlands, because indie rock made in England is still well regarded here. The Rifles also fit in perfectly with the long British tradition of 'the-bands' that write compact verses that irrevocably lead to choruses
… that you can reverberate with. The Morrissey-esque vocals and violins (!) Add depth to the title track while the uptempo single Fall To Sorrow is closer to the songs on their debut album. The Rifles, like their style brothers Moke, have received the blessing of Britpoppaus Paul Weller. That just doesn't prevent the songs on Great Escape from rolling out as easily as they came in. So it doesn't really last, but fans of the above mentioned artists should check out this old-fashioned fresh record. (PdK).more
