Playing football was the initial ambition of this young British club of friends. But after a good conversation, these guys must have decided that rock 'n' roll makes it much easier to pick up girls and travel around the world for free. In addition, a punk riff is easier to master than a good dribble, a matter of sifting through all the records of The Clash, The Libertines and The Rifles. Perhaps
… the strength of The Pigeon Detectives' debut is that this band really seems to go effortlessly to create catchy and energetic punk pop that could just as easily be 1979 as 2007. Frontman Matthew Bowman is definitely not a great singer but he knows how to compensate for this with a lot of bravado and attitude. He mainly sings about his adolescent love affairs while his accompanists cut their way staccato through the hectic, often short songs. Nice band, nice record, the soundtrack of a carefree puberty. Next year they will play basketball. (MR)more
