Two up-and-coming Dutch jazz musicians find each other on a traditional and warm sounding bebop album. Trumpeter Ian Cleaver and saxophonist Gideon Tazelaar are both prodigies who became addicted to their instruments at a young age and, after studying in New York and elsewhere, seem to breathe American jazz music. Both wind players also have a warm tone which they now let sound together as brothers
… in compositions by Cole Porter, Duke Ellington and Misha Mengelberg among others. It is remarkable how they managed to get Spanish drummer Jorge Rossy (especially known from the Brad Mehldau Trio) as well as Danish bass player Felix Moseholm. Mentors Benjamin Herman (saxophone) and Joris Roelofs (bass clarinet) also visited the studio for inspired additions. Although the music is far from contemporary, Volume 1 never sounds stale, but rather energetic and loving. (MR)more
