Peter Erskine is, next to Jack DeJohnette, one of the most heard modern jazz drummers. He became known as a timekeeper in Weather Report. He also played with Steps (Ahead), Steely Dan and Jan Garbarek and recorded some subtle trio CDs for ECM. Whether he plays pop, jazz or fusion, Erskine knows how to get the best out of it. This is also the case in his project with the guitarist Nguyên Lê from
… Vietnam and the French bassist Michel Benita. For their second album, this trio, also known as E_L_B, invited saxophonist Stéphane Guillaume. Dream Flight offers an alternating trip from subtle sounds to heavy sounds and from lyrical compositions to complex rhythms, all played with enthusiasm and sincerity. Nguyên Lê navigates with his guitar sound between the rawness of John Scofield and the spaciousness of Bill Frisell. He thus evokes memories of the CD Bass Desires by Marc Johnson, on which both guitarists played and which was drummed by, how could it be otherwise, Peter Erskine. Dream Flight is a similarly beautiful album. (HB)more
