In 2008, jazz fans can rejoice in a large number of trios of young pianists, such as Tord Gustavsen, Marcin Wasilewsky, Esbjörn Svensson and Yaron Herman. The range is so great that you would almost forget that there are also pianists with a longer track record, such as John Taylor. This Englishman has been active for quite some time and has accompanied saxophonist Jan Garbarek and trumpet player
… Kenny Wheeler, among others. He also made some well-appreciated solo albums and trio CDs. Whirlpool is a sequel to the critically acclaimed 2006 Angel Of The Presence. Taylor is again backed up by drummer Martin France and bassist Palle Danielsson. The latter has an almost equal role as band leader Taylor. Both are just as evenly matched as Bill Evans and Scott LaFaro in the famous Village Vanguard recordings from 1961. That means light and lyrical play in a mix of compositions by Taylor and Kenny Wheeler. A brilliant sounding CD. (HB)more
