Vibraphonist Gary Burton is also called the four-mallet phenomenon. This technique, in which he plays his instrument with four sticks, makes it sound as if two or three vibraphonists are playing at the same time. He also has a highly developed detective for young guitar talent. He has helped, among others, Larry Coryell, John Scofield and Pat Metheny in the saddle. His latest discovery is, at the
… time of the release of Generations, sixteen-year-old Julian Lage, who is also highly regarded by Herbie Hancock. Together with pianist Makoto Ozone (also a discovery of Burton), bassist James Genus and drummer Clarence Penn, he accompanies Burton on Generations, a CD reminiscent of the work of The Modern Jazz Quartet. Like this quartet, Burton fuses jazz with classical influences in a very refreshing way. The virtuoso accompaniment makes every song shine. (AD)more
