Pierre Attaingnant was not a composer but a publisher and printer of music collections. And not just one: he would become one of the most famous publishers of his time. He was also advanced by the "rights" of his compilations to acquire, so that competitors could not feel run off. In 1537 Attaingnant was additionally appointed to the royal music printer and -bibliothecaris. In his life he asked
… dozens of bundles of songs, instrumental works and, branles dancing but also masses and motets. This always were works by other composers, but Attaingnant arranged regularly or vocal music for lute or keyboard settlements. But it is not always clear what a particular piece than an operation.
