The deceased young composer Hans Rott was an orphan when he went to study at the Vienna Conservatory at the age of 18. Anton Bruckner was his organ teacher, and he met Gustav Mahler in the composition class. Bruckner had very high expectations of Rott and Mahler would later greatly admired talk about Rott, but in a competition in 1878, the jury was mortally sneering about his submitted composition,
… the first part of his First Symphony. Then two years later later, Brahms was very negative about the now completed symphony, and thus was denied a grant, Rott was snapped. During a train trip revealed itself a serious mental illness, which Rott the last years of his life spent in a psychiatric hospital, where he died of tuberculosis. Then he was virtually forgotten until his last symphony was performed in its entirety in 1989. Since then, this work is recorded several times, and other works received increasing attention.
