Besides John Lennon and Louis Armstrong's Antonio Carlos Jobim is one of three musicians to whom the airport is named, not just one: the largest in Brazil. It says something about the status of the humble Antonio "Tom" Jobim in his own country. Jobim is considered the inventor of bossa nova. Pianist Jobim had a background in jazz and classical music, while combining influences samba. The result was
… a sophisticated, new sound. Jobim got the idea when he was at home on the piano played a piece by Debussy and from his window heard a samba carnival. It got him thinking and he decided to fuse the two styles together. Jobims breakthrough came with Black Orpheus in 1959, a Brazilian adaptation of the Greek tragedy that took place against the backdrop of a favela. Jobim wrote for all the great singers of Brazil. Some of his most famous compositions are: Agua De Beber, Desafinado and Garota De Ipanema it was an international hit for Astrud Gilberto in 1964.more
