In the Library of Congress is a department dedicated to preserving cultural traditions, the American Folklife Center. Their Archive of Folk Culture contains fifty thousand recordings from the beginning of this century to the present day, from all corners of the world. The "Endangered music project" tries to make these recordings accessible to the public. The proceeds of the project will be used to
… support endangered cultures. The CD khx0742 contains recordings that the composer and musicologist Luiz Heitor Corrêa de Azevedo made in the early 1940s in the states of Ceará and Minas Gerais in Brazil. The CD contains music from both black and white populations in those areas. The 1930s were golden times for those who wanted to delve into Afro-Brazilian culture. In 1935, the Discoteca Pública Municipal de Sao Paulo was founded, intended as an archive of Brazilian folklore. In the early 1940s, the Discoteca sent a research team to Brazil's northern and northeastern provinces. The result is on the CD khx0744. It features Portuguese, African, Afro-Brazilian and Amerindian music and mixes of these genres. Fortunately, the quality of the recordings is still very good.
