Karan Casey moved from Ireland to America at the age of eighteen. Her journey was probably less intense than the crossing that many of her compatriots ventured to the New World in the mid-nineteenth century. The songs on this album are largely about those migrants of the time, and tell about shipwrecks, hunger and poverty, but also about the hope for a better life. Casey is assisted on this album
… by guitarist John Doyle with whom she shares a past in the group Solas. The album is completely acoustic, mostly the instrumentation consists of only Doyle's guitar and Casey's elastic voice. Michael McGordick's flute gives a number of songs that typical Irish accent. Perhaps it is because Casey is also a migrant herself, but she conveys the feelings of the emigrants convincingly. Hope and homesickness alternate on this convincing album. (PdK)more
