For fans of the psychedelic Beatles, the 'snack' Magical Mystery Tour remains a favorite. It was The Beatles' first album after manager Brian Epstein's death. Somewhat lost, the band plunged into the next adventure, a television movie for the BBC. The muddled result, which aired on Christmas Eve, disappointed and The Beatles faced bad reviews for the first time. However, the music for the film was
… fine again. Complemented with the singles Strawberry Fields Forever / Penny Lane (originally intended for Sgt. Pepper) and All You Need Is Love / Baby You're A Rich Man (of which side A was recorded on the first worldwide satellite broadcast Our World) it was released on the marketed. While it is the coherence of Sgt. Pepper is missing, Magical Mystery Tour is a wonderfully playful album, that is at most less seasoned than the predecessor. I Am The Walrus is perhaps The Beatles' most successful psychedelic song, with its bizarre lyrics and beautiful orchestration. After this album, The Beatles got fed up with all the experimentation and developed a more mature rock sound. (MS)more
