After playing with
Best Coast for about 10 years, Bethany Cosentino felt it was time for the next step. The California-based singer and songwriter felt how her identity as a person and artist had become intertwined with that of Best Coast and wants to break through this with her first solo album Natural Disaster. Over a decade, the Best Coast duo developed their lo-fi indie surf rock from debut
… record Crazy For You (2010) to the solid American new wave rock and electro of Always Tomorrow (2020). On Natural Disaster, Cosentino moves even more toward mainstream rock and even country pop. Her upbeat vocal melodies set to solid guitar motifs contrast strikingly with her fatalistically bleak view of man, particularly the way we treat nature. Man is a "natural disaster" and better off extinct, is her message right from the start in the opening title track. The character she shows in her lyrics is somewhat lacking in the average pop songs of Natural Disaster. (MR)more
