For more than 150 years, speakers - Karl Marx and George Orwell among many others - have proclaimed their opinions on issues of politics, culture and religion from a soapbox in London's Hyde Park. At another Speakers Corner, a little further southeast, poets and rappers have been climbing the stage at the Brixton Jamm Nightclub since 2006. … for its first album. On it, Peter Bennie (bass), Kwake Bass (drums), Biscuit (flute) and Raven Bush (violin) are joined by a host of guests, including Tirzah, Sampha, Kae Tempest and Shabaka Hutchings. The result is a stylish blend of jazz, hip-hop and dance, such as can really only be made in the cultural melting pot of London. It is interesting to lay Further Out Than The Edge alongside the compilation album released earlier the same year Transmissions From Total Refreshment Centre, from yet another creative hotbed in the English capital. It makes one note that Bisquit, who also operates as a producer, arrives at a very different result with more or less the same ingredients. Quieter, more contemplative, but no less inspiring.
