He is best known as a producer and session guitarist in the Norwegian hard rock world. Other than that, the name Anders Buaas does not ring many bells. It is remarkable that this multi-instrumentalist born in Larvik in 1974 manages to shake up the prog world with The Edinburgh Suite. Why did the Norwegian choose music based on this city? That is unclear, but the two-part suite consisting of Old Town
… and New Town is a musical monument to historic Edinburgh and Scottish culture. This is done through a musical roller coaster that shoots from Scottish folk to complex prog and from menacing Scottish marching music to epic rock, and in which we can hear what a gifted rock guitarist Buaas is as well. A comparison to Mike Oldfield's famous Tubular Bells suite (1973) is not off the mark, but that may safely be taken as a recommendation. Besides, this dizzying musical urban trip has plenty of its own flavor. (MR)more
