Music Web was enthusiastic about the unnamed
debut album by The Antler King in 2011. The reviewer even felt that the apt and confident album could have been their fourth. Dances is the actual fourth album by the Belgian duo, consisting of singer Esther Lybeert and instrumentalist Maarten Flamand. The Antler King is a typical husband-wife duo in traditions of
Goldfrapp or
Beach House. Together,
… Lybeert and Flamand create their own intimate world. Dances is dominated by traditional dance rhythms like the foxtrot, the polka and the waltz, but you can only really dance to the funky Swing448. Dances is mainly about atmosphere. With the slightly eccentric and sometimes creepy vocals, subdued songs and lo-fi leaning productions, this couple gives the listener an insight into their co-created universe. (MR)more
