The reviews and ratings-collecting website Metacritic once calculated that Spoon was the best-reviewed band of the years 2000-2010. Yet the Texas band never achieved the same (cult) status as contemporaries like
Pavement and
Pixies. But they still exist and are in good shape, as can be heard on their tenth studio album Lucifer On The Sofa. They once named themselves after a song by
Can and share
… with this German group a strong sense of rhythm. On Lucifer On The Sofa, they flirt heavily with disco (Wild), glam (The Hardest Cut) and even smooth rock (highlight The Devil & Mister Jones), among others. In passing, Bill Callahan is also covered (Hero), but drummer Jim Eno knows how to give everything a solid groove. Together with singer, keyboardist, guitarist and bassist Britt Daniel, Eno is part of the original core of the group. With an excellent new line-up as an addition, Spoon sounds young and driven on this rock solid alternative rock album. (MR)more
