Canadian group Suuns has created a furore with their idiosyncratic mix of styles, including krautrock, indie, electronica and art punk. On their fifth album, however, the Montreal group has taken a step back to create a more subdued version of their experimental sound, which leaves plenty of room for subcutaneous tension. The songs on The Witness flow smoothly into one another, making the entire
… album seem like one long composition. For The Witness the (now) threesome uses influences from jazz and post-rock. Although there is little explosiveness, unlike on previous albums, the trio keeps it exciting with haunting, often repeating melodies and percussion. It's haunting to a point, but unfortunately there are a few interchangeable songs on The Witness that just babble by unnoticeably. (JvQ)more
