After the release of
Fever (2019), Flemish group Balthazar saw their violinist Patricia Vanneste leave. On Sand, therefore, no dashing string arrangements can be found. Still, the group sounds like its old self here, although this time they worked more with drum samples and bass synths. A large part of the album came about online because of the corona pandemic. It didn't feel unnatural to the band
… though, as they had already gone their separate ways with solo projects before. Balthazar's use of horns gives their music its typical sultry twist, while the rhythm section sometimes creates an oppressive feel. The thematic thread that runs through the album focuses on the uncertainty and restlessness of life in the here and now. Restless doesn't sound like the band here, Sand is one of Balthazar's most cohesive records where they spread their influences even wider than before. (JvQ)more
