On Monovision you can hear how Ray LaMontagne returns to the singer-songwriter sound of his debut album (2004). With albums such as (2014), (2017) and (2018), the American experimented more with psychedelic music afterwards. A fixture on LaMontagnes albums is his beautiful hoarse voice, which here is accompanied by guitar music with influences from folk, country and blues. His quiet songs exude
… a strong 70s atmosphere, with artists like or most likely served as a source of inspiration. The understated and graceful guitar playing is complemented by harmonica and mild percussion. LaMontagne played all the instruments himself and took care of the production. His eighth album is headstrong and at the same time familiar, engaging and resigned. (JvQ)more
