Due to the corona crisis, Lady Gaga was forced to postpone the release of her sixth album Chromatica from the beginning of April to the end of May 2020. And all of us could have used some Gaga during our quarantine. After the singer on albums like
Cheek To Cheek (2014) with
Tony Bennett,
Joanne (2016) and the soundtrack for
A Star Is Born (2018) seems to have lost her wild hair, she goes back to
… Chromatica completely for extravagance. Take me to wonderland', she sings in the song Alice. Once again Gaga has created her own world, which is colourful in all its simplicity. This time Gaga dives into electronic music, so deep that every song actually fits into the club. There is house, eurodance, nu-disco, a lot of camp and as icing on the cake some instrumental orchestral interludes. To be honest, the thumping rhythms often resemble each other, but the amount of irresistible moments on Chromatica are numerous. Just listen to the transition from Chromatica II to 911, her strangest song in times that would not have been out of place at Artpop (2013). Or how about the last 30 seconds (drum & bass someone?) of the Eurovision Song Contest-worthy duet Sine From Above with none other than Elton John. And then there is the last song Babylon, a very successful tribute to Madonna's Vogue. (JvQ)more
