Hipsters could indulge themselves with the first two albums by the New York art rockers of Yeasayer. Their mix of electropop, indie and influences from African music was a whimsical whole, which was complemented by the somewhat tearful voice of Chris Keating. On sequels such as (2012) and (2016), the band came to their senses a bit more and they applied a more compact sound, within which there was
… still room for crazy outliers. Their fifth album Erotic Returns is with half an hour and only nine songs their most compact album so far, also in terms of sound. Keating's typical voice guides you through the band's slightly psychedelic sound. It is a pity that the songs are so short, the chasing horns in 24-Hour Hateful Live, for example, could have done a bit longer. Yeasayer actually applies the same trick to Erotic Returns. That makes for a tasty record, but it is not a glorious return. (JvQ)more
