Singer / songwriter Joe Henry makes albums for foodies. The American is also a lover of balanced music. For example, in the liner notes of his album Thrum, he is lyrical about the voice of on a particular live recording. With many metaphors he explains how he draws inspiration from both the vocals and the recording technique. You allow such an inspired man to make records. Especially when it produces
… rootsy albums like Thrum. The production is delicate and the melodies delicate. It sounds like Henry and his band could make a mistake at any time. It all seems very fragile. Thrum was recorded live (and mixed!) On old-fashioned tape. Bands rarely make records anymore. Nothing can be determined afterwards. If something goes wrong, it has to be done again. However, these are not just any musicians. Henry is a top producer and his band is dyed in the wool. Special attention is given to Henry's son Levon, who plays impressive solos on his saxophone and clarinet. His input connects like a puzzle piece to the americana sound of Henry's band. Like everything actually fits exactly on this record. (JE)more
