Krautrock or Deutsche electronic musik originated in the 60s / 70s as a reaction to the English and American rock establishment. It is now mainly seen as a precursor to ambient techno and embraced by many hip producers and DJs. Munich-based guitarist / keyboardist JJ Whitefield (Jan Weissenfeldt) is the driving force behind German funk and hip hop bands such as Poets of Rhythm, Whitefield Brothers
… and Karl Hector & The Malcouns. Together with wind instrument / keyboard player Johannes Schleiermacher, he is now taking a completely different approach. Bubbling, cracking and bleeping analog synths immerse you in a warm Kraut bath. Electronic German bands from yesteryear like Tangerine Dream, Ash Ra and Cluster are never far away. After the more rhythm-based Drumside, the duo goes even deeper into Dreamside, with an important role for self-recorded field recordings from Morocco. Music to close your eyes and float away, just like decades ago. (MR)more
