Seven Davis Jr's Universes album seems like the work of a muddled professor. You can clearly hear that the American producer has a lot to offer. And at the same time, it is sometimes impossible to make sense of it. According to his biography, Seven Davis Jr was destined to become a gospel singer. … is miles away from that original plan. Davis Jr does have a very agile soul voice. With that voice he could easily envelop the listener, but he often chooses a difficult path. His vocals are sometimes overloaded with basses and percussion. The restless and intense songs are alternated with songs that are very bare again. Seven Davis Jr doesn't seem to know a happy medium. He's brave anyway. For example, friend and producer sing their own song halfway through the album. Colleagues and contribute significantly. Seven Davis Jr is clearly the most willful and toughest producer of this group of friends. (JE)more
