When this album comes out, Jerry Williams has been a musician for a few years. To be precise: sixty years. As a twelve-year-old child prodigy he made his first record, later he mainly worked as a producer and songwriter. He also released a number of strong albums under the name Swamp Dogg, of which Total Destruction To Your Mind (1970) is regarded as a cult classic among soul lovers. In 1999 Kid
… Rock sampled the title track from that album and renewed attention brought Swamp Dogg back to the stage. Those years of experience can also be heard on this artisanal album. Williams dips between all kinds of styles with careless ease. Soul, funk, gospel, rhythm & blues and even a pinch of disco, the master puts it all to his will. The White Man Made Me Do It ticks on for over an hour but remains enjoyable until the end. As an extra, a compilation CD has been added with the best songs that Williams wrote for others, sung by Irma Thomas, ZZ Hill and Doris Duke, among others. (PdK)more
