Canadian singer Kiesza (Kiesa Rae Ellestad) scored a huge hit in the spring of 2014 with her single Hideaway. The song stood out because of the video clip, shot entirely in one take, with Kiesza singing and dancing through the streets of Brooklyn. Even more than the video, Hideaway's sound drew attention: this seemed to be from the early 1990s. Hideaway was strongly reminiscent of the days when the
… triumphal march of house had only just started and singers such as CeCe Peniston (Finally, 1992), Robin S. (Show Me Love, 1993) and Kristine W (Feel What You Want, 1994) had hits. Sound Of A Woman is Kiesza's full-length debut, and that she is serious about the nineties revival is evident from her ballad version of Haddaway's hit What Is Love (1993). Besides danceable tracks that hark back to the nineties-house sound, there are also slow (retro) soul and r & b songs in the style of Jessie Ware on the album. With Sound Of A Woman, Kiesza has made a record that will certainly please nostalgics for the nineties. (IV)more
