For a moment Mechanical Bull didn't seem to get there at all. In the run-up to the sixth studio album, the Followill brothers from Kings of Leon were able to skin each other. When the album is released everything is back to normal, bass player Matthew even speaks of 'a fight that was blown up by the media'. His words are reinforced by the musical click that is still clearly audible on Mechanical
… Bull. The sparks fly off on Supersoaker and Don't Matter and the pleasure in the collaboration is also noticeable on the more subdued songs like Beautiful War and Comeback Story. What is striking is that apart from the single Supersoaker, there seems to be no radio hit in the record. The commercialism seems to have left the foursome cold in the making of Mechanical Bull, which has resulted in a pointed, but balanced album. There is no noticeable conflict on the eleven songs. Everything seems to be on edge and that has brought out the best in the Followill's. (BvdV)more
