With album titles such as Multi Contra Culti and Trans-Continental Hustle, Gogol Bordello demonstrated the band's diverse roots. The members of the gypsy punk group founded in New York come from Belarus, Ukraine, Ethiopia, Ecuador and Hong Kong, among others. You could almost say it's a figment of a smart manager, because it fits the band perfectly. Gogol Bordello has played pretty much every
… continent since 1999 and seems to have absorbed some local influences everywhere. Punk rock nevertheless remains the basis of their worldly music. The sixth album is also mainly a tour de force of fast, simple songs with the overarching message that national borders are the scars of the globe. Frontman Eugene Hütz will not be held back by these devised dividing lines. He previously exchanged his Eastern European roots for the United States and in 2012 for Brazil and Argentina successively. On stage he does not accept any limits and regularly dives into the audience half naked. Actually, the band is at its best in such interaction with fans and festivalgoers. A nice CD like Pura Vida Conspiracy has little to add to that. (JE)more
