Foxygen is the duo Sam France (vocals) and Jonathan Rado (guitar / keys). These two young Californians released several EPs independently since their high school days and an album that was re-released in 2012 by the Jagjaguwar label. The title of their second album sounds very pretentious, but could also just be a joke. Just like the music that sounds as if the duo with a time machine from 1968 have
… entered the twenty-first century. Their psychedelic pop songs are mostly sixties-looking pictures with references to The Kinks, Pink Floyd and The Velvet Underground. Music that they completely master both compositionally and recording-technically. France has also added a coquettish British accent, as if he belongs to the rock nobility of the Swinging London of yesteryear. The most special thing is that their most beautiful songs, such as San Francisco and Shuggie, can even compete with the best of that time and after a few spins cannot be burned out of your head. If this album is a joke then it is definitely a success. (MR)more
