In 2011 Paradise Lost performed the full Draconian Times at concerts. This 1995 album is considered one of the highlights in the oeuvre of the English doom metal band. After that, according to the fans, it went downhill with CDs that drifted further and further away from metal. In an interview with Aardschok, the band admits this guiltily. With the recent tour and this CD, the group is returning to
… its old steps: Tragic Idol embraces the Paradise Lost sound of the mid-nineties. The lingering unwieldy riffs and the hoarse roar of frontman Nick Holmes are present from the start. The two opening tracks could have been on Icon of Draconian Times and thus measure themselves against the best work of the group. The fact that the gentlemen are now in their forties (and fathers) has hardly any influence on their gloomy world view. A comforting thought for the old fans of the band. (PdK)more
