The Dutch soul singer Sherry Dyanne has always had a preference for the great soul and jazz singers of the last century. That she maintains the authenticity of this period without difficulty, she already showed on Spinning Out by Sven Hammond Soul. Sing Me A Song started with a Facebook appeal asking her friends to send her beautiful and sometimes forgotten old songs so she could sing them for them.
That way she discovered new music herself and it yielded her three (Billie's Blues, Lost Mind, Wait Till You See Him) songs for Sing Me A Song. But it didn't stop there. To make the CD sound like it would in the fifties or sixties, she contacted Vincent Helbers of Flowriders who still had a box of original microphones from that time in his studio. The result is clear. Sing Me A Song sounds like the music was recorded over fifty years ago. Not only the covers, but also Dyanne's own compositions radiate the atmosphere of a smoky jazz club. Her heart is in the right place, which is reminiscent of a time when it was still about feeling instead of technical virtuosity. (AD)more
