Rob Garza and Eric Hilton are critical of society in their lyrics and Culture Of Fear, their seventh album as Thievery Corporation, is no different. The fact that both men grew up in Washington DC, undoubtedly the most secure capital in the world, must have something to do with it. The text in the title track of rapper Mr Lif analyzes the culture of fear that especially the United States has in its
… grip. Thievery Corporation provides an answer to that fear with their music. With their languid mix of soul, lounge and dub, they push their listeners into a comfortable dream. One of the most effective fear fighters on this CD is an Iranian singer (for many Americans national enemy number 1) but the charming LouLou Ghelichkhani has a feather-light voice with which she sensually wanders around the rhythm of tassel drums. Thievery Corporation therefore continues to give weight to the lounge genre in text and music. With Culture Of Fear, the group consolidates its top position within this music style. (PdK)more
