Mixing styles is typical of My Morning Jacket. Is the American band now making roots or indie and how can that be combined with all those hip-hop, soul and hard rock influences? The sixth album of the group around singer, songwriter and bearded monkey is again nice and diffuse. For example, the undersigned spot on the first two songs -strijkers and alonepianos, both supported by heavy guitars.
The song Holding On The Black Metal does not exactly live up to its name with an infectious funk riff, soul horns and a huge background chorus. That giant is actually the only common denominator on the CD, because all songs are drenched in reverb. Still, partly due to all the echoes, the sound of the band does not hang together like loose sand. The fact that the band covers during concerts with the same ease as does not mean that My Morning Jacket is overly fickle. How it works is a mystery, but Circuital sounds like a logical mix of styles. You have to sit down for a while, but then you also have something. (JE)more
