The short existence and demise of the Texan group Lift To Experience is surrounded by myths. After the promising debut The Texas-Jerusalem Crossroads in 2001, this trio seemed to disappear into nothing. Ten years later, this new sign of life from their singer and guitarist Josh T. Pearson appears. If he really reports on that lost decade on this album, then he knows how to keep those myths alive.
Accompanying himself with abstract strumming and misty drones on his acoustic guitar, he reports, in slow songs that sometimes reach over ten minutes, of nothing but sin, depression and failing love. Strings sometimes add to the drama, but the overall atmosphere remains almost painfully naked and raw. Rage resounds in his expressive voice, but Pearson can also search for words almost hesitantly, as if calling the numbers on the spot. That it all feels sincere and authentic is the strength of this album and keeps you nailed to Pearson's music and stories. (MR)more
