Just as Australian Nick Cave was beginning to take root as a deeply serious and thoughtful singer / songwriter, he surprised friend and foe in 2007 with Grinderman's debut album. On this he (aided by a stripped-down version of The Bad Seeds) resumed with gusto his former status as king of trash rock, which he once held as the front man of The Birthday Party. He seemed furious at this to sneer and
… roar about his midlife crisis. With success because on this self-titled successor this club sounds just as wild but also a lot more relaxed. Under the motto of the opening lines 'I woke up this morning and I thought what am I doing here', Grinderman plays bluesy, animated and noisy but also humorous. A great playground for the cave in the fifties that has not been exhausted. (MR)more
