Just as Australian Nick Cave was beginning to take root as a deeply serious and thoughtful singer / songwriter, he surprised friend and foe in 2007 with Grinderman's debut album. On this he (aided by a stripped-down version of The Bad Seeds) resumed with gusto his former status as king of trash rock, which he once held as the front man of The Birthday Party. … roar about his midlife crisis. With success because on this self-titled successor this club sounds just as wild but also a lot more relaxed. Under the motto of the opening lines 'I woke up this morning and I thought what am I doing here', Grinderman plays bluesy, animated and noisy but also humorous.
