A new elusive band emerges from hip and artistic Brooklyn (New York). Dirty Projectors was initially the artistic vehicle of guitarist, singer and songwriter Dave Longstreth. But his initial accompanists undoubtedly worked their way up to full band members on Bitte Orca. The foursome follow each other seemingly effortlessly in scotch and crooked compositions full of tempo changes, derailed funk,
… weird freak folk, African patterns and hissing post-punk. Longstrenth sings himself through this with great vocal elasticity and a voice in which Devendra Banhart and Antony (from The Johnsons) seem to come together. But the undisputed weapon on Bitte Orca is the mysteriously intertwined angelic song of Amber Coffman and (what's in a name) Angel Deradoorian. They give coherence to the erratic sound and when they perceive the lead vocals, for example in the single Stillness Is The Move and Two Doves, Dirty Projectors sounds almost accessible. A plate like a wild and lively abstract expressionist painting. (MR)more
