The Dandy Warhols are obsessed with pop culture in all its facets and everything the group produces - music, videos, artwork and of course their band name - contains numerous small references. Sometimes they go through that gaudy postmodernism, but just as often it produces irresistible pop music, such as their one and only hit Bohemian Like You. On their sixth album… Earth To Dandy Warhols science
… fiction is embraced, which (in addition to appropriate artwork) has translated into thirteen hypnotic, sometimes long drawn-out rock songs. Heavily manipulated vocals join forces with instruments recorded backwards, muddy guitars and Brent de Boer's cool rocking drums, perhaps the most recognizable element of the Dandy sound. In addition, Love Song and Mis Amigos again have some catchy pop songs to discover. But the psychedelic soundscapes dominate more than ever, even in country tinged songs like Love Song and Sherrif Shorty. The Velvet Underground influences have still not disappeared, but the Warhols are increasingly making 'cosmic American music'. Not a bad development. (MS)more
