In 2006 the creatively almost dead Incognito surprised friend and foe with Bees & Things & Flowers on which leader Jean 'Bluey' Maunick arranged a number of old hits, covers and new songs in a completely different way. This proved to be an excellent exercise for the new line on which Incognito is now active. Even though the jolly soul with beat is back, the depth in the arrangements has
… fortunately remained. Tales Fom The Beach is right in the middle. Maunick seems to have studied the work of Quincy Jones for Michael Jackson and Skip Scarborough for Earth, Wind & Fire, especially with regard to the pointed wind arrangements. The beats have also undergone an adventurous metamorphosis, harking back to a distant past in which Incognito was still an instrumental fusion band. Tales From The Beach shows that sometimes it is necessary to go all the way back to basics to get a run-out project back on track. (AD)more
