In her homeland America, Devotchka is already a small sensation. The band toured with a variety of artists (Calexico, Belle & Sebastian, Gogol Bordello) from coast to coast. In 2004 the band recorded How It Ends in the Arizona desert. So the album had been out for a while in the United States. The album is now released in Europe via a distribution deal with Anti. Still, you may have heard
… Devotchka before. The group wrote most of the soundtrack for the movie Little Miss Sunshine. And that fits, because Devotchka plays music with a cinematic character. The sweltering The Enemy Guns can thus be used for an exciting western film. The band's approach is strongly rooted in the American indie scene, but the instruments (including double bass, accordion, bouzouki and tuba) have a folky feel. Folk music from the USA, Mexico and Eastern Europe are therefore an important inspiration for the band. How It Ends is an intriguing album that will certainly appeal to fans of Beirut and Arcade Fire. (PdK)more
