Kid Koala was born Eric Yick-Keung San in Vancouver, Canada in 1975. As a turntablist he makes music with two turntables and an extensive vinyl collection. Unlike many of his colleagues, he is not concerned with styles and skills, but with composing full-fledged songs. This caught the attention of the experimental hip-hop duo Coldcut with whose label Ninja Tune he has been contracted since 1997.
Kid Koala has a good ear for music can already be heard on his debut Carpal Tunnel Syndrome from 2000, but on Some Of My Friends Are DJs he surpasses himself. With his record collection he creates complete compositions varying from jazz (Basin Street Blues) via ska (Skanky Panky) to elevator music (Elevator Hopper), in addition to the usual, but incidental hip-hop beats on this CD. At More Dance Music he even lets a complete big band come out of his turntables. His sense of humor is further emphasized by the connecting lyrics and sound effects between the songs and the comic booklet supplied free of charge. (AD)more
